Name: Diyan "DJ Gagalove" Gagalov Born: Bulgaria City: Stara Zagora Style: "I would describe it as mixture of tech and groovy, sometimes with vocals but... definitely loud & Clear”
Question: EM - Hi Diyan, thank you for taking the time to interview with us. Where are you today (Bulgaria)?
Answer: DJ - HI Thomas, I feel happy for having the chance to spend some time with you and your audience. Yes I’m in Bulgaria now. The winter is overtaking us here in Stara Zagora but the emotion of the forthcoming holidays makes me feel better and better!
Question: EM - We always like knowing the roots of the DJ. It seems that Russia was your first experience with music. You got a guitar and played the school tenor. Having this kind of musical upbringing must have helped with your first encounters as a DJ.
Answer: DJ - Back in those early days (right after the quiet revolution)… I realized that we have never had a proper record shop here in Bulgaria. I had some 20 specially selected tapes with rap and the courage to face the public in the local venues. That’s how I started and immediately found out that behind the decks one can run into some great ideas spontaneously and the only thing you can count on is the feeling that is inside you. Because I was part of an orchestra it gives you the sense of time and harmony and ability to put forth all those idea.
Question: EM - Some DJ’s believe that technology has made it easy for people to become DJ’s and that isn’t good for the market while others believe it’s mostly based on selection of music so it doesn’t matter how easy it has become. You had to work with tapes, cutting and putting together edits and breaks and what not. How do you view the technology and the DJ’s of today? Is there a difference and is it based on music selection only?
Answer: DJ - I would rather say I belong to the ‘others’ category but I never blame the technology and its commercialization. I love the 12”s and everything connected with it. Being a practical person – the way I collect my music has changed for the last 10 years mainly because of the wide availability of music in digital download stores and a lot of promos I am receiving through my email. I can do edits, mashups, and play them the same night. I use CD players and enjoy it. At this moment I would not use a laptop. To me it looks like you’re chatting or writing emails all night. On the other hand – Isn’t It Funny? Everybody can download music, setting a facebook profile and putting ‘DJ’ in the front of his or her name (not particularly in this order) and in this way everybody can get the Thursdays in the local club. Would you like to come – It’s FREE to get in …!?! I believe the technology is good enough as long as it helps us to be better in what we are doing. The Market is an entirely different subject operated by the rule of `As long as people enjoy it and are ready to pay for IT it’s good`.
Question: EM - It’s winter now and everyone is probably wishing summer was here. Beach bars are some of the best places to enjoy a DJ. Cacao Beach is a great beach resort to enjoy the summer, the Black Sea and especially your tunes. What can you tell our readers who want to travel to Europe, especially the ones who haven’t been to Bulgaria and would like to visit?
Answer: DJ - Having in mind the summer we usually thinking of the Black Sea resorts but Bulgaria is much more. The clubs are planning their season around several Big Names and/or Events that bring in thousands to Cacao Beach which is great. The bigger it gets the harder it becomes to top those cozy parties with unique atmosphere, avant-garde music and incredibly nice people. To everyone who plans to party in Bulgaria I would say: Be hard to please, spend some time to inform yourself like where things are happening and don’t be afraid to ask others. And have fun!
Question: EM - You enjoy more intimate club settings. What does a smaller club do for you compared to a larger club or mega club?
Answer: DJ - I have performed in front of thousands of people or in the face of just 20. I like them both. The close distance in some clubs where I don’t even need a monitor to mix touches me in a very different way. The atmosphere of people who know their taste and place is unique as well as the fact that all of us are sharing the same sound at the same time. I also love Open Air and mountain fests too.
Question: EM - Your “Loud & Clear” sounds is loved by many and our readers will be listening to a sample of it with the mix you have prepared for them. Other then flying to Bulgaria to listen to you where else can someone here you on a more frequent basis?
Answer: DJ - I guess it could be on my weekly radio show. `KEF` which has been on Air for more than 12 years presenting almost all metamorphosis of electronic music in the best possible way. Through guest mixes from fellow Djs, interviews or complete albums. It’s every Sunday on the Bulgarian National Radio - Radio Stara Zagora, starting right after the news at (ten) 22:00 e.e.t. I play many different themes that I cannot usually afford to play at clubs. At the moment I have one more radio show. `Cacao Feeling` it is on Air with Radio Nova (Sofia) every Thursday at 18:00 e.e.t. and it is more mix-oriented and focused on modern house music.
Question: EM - North America has a lot of Bulgarians and people from the Balkans and all of Europe in general. We know a lot of them would love to see you in person. Any plans for a Canadian and/or US tour?
Answer: DJ - Well... I have some contacts with club owners in Chicago and New York and I hope we will soon find the right deal for a gig in those places. I think that the promoters are more cautious in this crisis and the same is for me as an artist. I had some wonderful gigs in Italy and I can’t wait to get back there. Recently I joined the brand new DEMO Entertainment agency in Bulgaria and we are considering some future events. I can ensure you that I will take very seriously every good offer and I will definitely let you know.
